This is probably the most common question asked by future steel roof owners as well as the biggest misconception about steel roofing. Most of us have heard the common phrase “like rain on a tin roof”. Many of us have also been in a steel building or barn during a rain storm and have listened to the pounding rain and believe that it is the way all steel roofing sounds. However, this isn’t the case on residential roofs with solid conventional sheeting when placed directly over solid roof sheeting or shingles. In the buildings where you can hear the rain the roof was installed with purlins. There is no solid surface between you and the steel roofing, causing the sound of the rain to be heard. Because your new steel roof is going to be installed over a solid surface, 90% of the sound you would have heard on a roof installed on purlins will disappear. The sounds of rain on steel roofing is only about 10% noisier than shingles.

While very few surfaces can withstand golf ball size hail, our class 4 impact resistant steel actually holds up so exceptionally well during a hail storm that most insurance companies will give you a discount on your insurance premiums. This is mainly true when installed on a solid surface (unlike purlin systems on barns, etc.) All our steel is a high quality class 4 impact resistant steel.

While steel roofing will not hold your house together during a tornado, when installed by professionals, it is rated to withstand winds up to 130 mph. Time and time again during windstorms, steel roofs have remained unscathed while neighboring shingle roofs were destroyed. A high testimony to this was during Hurricane Ike on the gulf coast in Texas. There were houses with steel roofing that were intact right beside houses with conventional shingles where the entire roof was completely ruined. Once the wind pulled up the shingles, the storm began causing damage to the sheeting underneath. Not only did the steel roofing stay intact but it protected the integrity of their house.

Steel does expand and contract slightly with heat and cold. This is usually not a concern for residential roofs with lengths under 30 feet. For larger commercial roofs a clip system is used to allow for movement. Regarding the condensation, it will have some condensation. However, the shingles that remain under your steel roofing or the use of our air foil insulation acts as an underlayment to prevent this problem.
